Get Involved

Thanks to all who have applied to be involved in the creation of Practicing Democracy! Our deadline for participant applications is past and now we are in the process of booking interviews and making final selections.

If you applied and didn't hear back from us, there was some difficulty in reaching you because every applicant who could be reached has been contacted by now. We are grateful to all those who expressed interest however, we received over 80 applications for 30 positions - so not everyone who applied was selected.

If you are interested in getting involved in this project, there are three ways you can join us in Practicing Democracy!

1. See the play
Performances are March 3- 21, 2004 in three Vancouver venues. Each performance is your opportunity to Practice Democracy. Only by being there are you able to come up on stage and have a say in what recommendations go into the Legal Expert's Report. Come once, come often! All tickets are by donation. For more details click here.

2. Volunteer on our publicity team
We are hosting two volunteer team gatherings here at the Headlines office where we will explain the project in more detail and send out a team of Vancouverites to promote the show. What will give this project weight and legitimacy (as well as make each night crackle with excitement) is packing the house with audiences from around the city. This is so that report that goes to City Council is reflective of the diverse perspectives of Vancouver residents. If you would like to know more about the project or the people involved, we invite you to come to either or both of the following nights:

Thursday January 29, 5:30-7 pm
Monday February 23, 5:30-7 pm

Please call 604-871-0508 to RSVP.

3. Build networks
If you are looking for a way to get the word out about a project you are building or an event you are hosting which is related to welfare cuts or local democracy, then we invite you to link up with us!

* post information on our website
* put materials on our resource table during the shows
* include a message in our program

It is our goal to assist in providing links between diverse organizations and individuals who are either specifically affected by the Provincial Government's cuts to welfare or who are more generally practicing democracy.

It is also our goal to build momentum around this event so that in March the interactive production gets as much public input as possible and by April, when the Legal Expert's Report goes to Vancouver City Council, there are other Vancouver residents who are linked together and able to take action.

If you would like to find out more information or you have some suggestions about how Vancouverites may continue this dialogue after the release of the Legal Expert's Report, please contact Jennifer Girard a 604-871-0508 or write to outreach@headlinestheatre.com.
