HEADLINES THEATRE TRAINING 2008 WORKSHOPS INFORMATION

When: Level 1 August 6 to 11 * Level 2 August 14 to 19, 2008.

Where: Ukrainian Hall, 805 East Pender St, at Hawks Ave, Vancouver, BC Located east of the downtown core of Vancouver.

Times: 9:00am - 5:30pm daily

Thank you for your interest in coming to Vancouver for the THEATRE FOR LIVING training this year. We have put together this package of information to assist you with making arrangements for your stay. As Vancouver is a popular tourist destination in the summer, we advise you to confirm your accommodations as soon as possible.

Although there are a variety of places to choose from, Headlines has reserved shared rooms at The Hostelling International Downtown, located in Vancouver's West End for the first eight people (per level) who wish to book them.

Rates: $28.50/night (includes towels, linens, and continental breakfast between 8:00am – 9:00am)

For Level 1 Participants, we have reserved a dorm-style room with 4 beds for men (Booking #52685) and a dorm-style room with 4 beds for women (Booking #52686). The reservations are for August 5-12. *Reservation deadline for Level 1 accommodation is July 14.

For Level 2 Participants, we have reserved a dorm-style room with 4 beds for men (Booking #52687) and a dorm-style room with 4 beds for women (Booking #52688). The reservations are for August 13-20. *Reservation deadline for Level 2 accommodation is July 21.

Please scroll down for a complete accommodations list and travel information. Also note, coffee and tea will be provided during the workshop. The workshop space will be equipped with a fridge. As there are few cafes and restaurants located near the workshop space, we recommend that participants brings their own lunch. The Hostelling International Downtown has shared and private rooms reserved under Headlines Theatre. A shared room holds four people and a private room holds 1 to 2 people. All rooms share the bathrooms/kitchens/common leisure areas. The hostel is located near the beach and aquatic centre. It is approximately a 25min bus ride to the workshop space.

Please note that private rooms are available during the workshop period but must be reserved by mid-May.

Hostelling International Jericho Beach is quiet and scenic, across the street from Jericho Beach. Located on Vancouver1s west side, this hostel is approximately a 35min bus ride to the workshop space.

The Cambie Hostels offers a light breakfast daily. Their dormitory-style rooms hold 4-8. Shared rooms hold 2 to 4 people. Both locations are approximately a 10-15min bus ride from the workshop space. The Cambie Street location is close to the "rough area" of Vancouver.

The YWCA offers a variety of rooms from private with bath and TV to dormitory-style. All rooms have a fridge and telephone. Guests have free access to an off-premises gym and pool (15min walk). The YWCA is located just east of the downtown, approximately a 10min bus ride from the workshop space.

Shaughnessy Village is a bed-and-breakfast high-rise. The Studio room sleeps two and the Superior room sleeps up to four people (2 double beds). Each additional person costs $10/night above the listed rates. It has private bathrooms, TV, radio, balcony, fridge, microwave in each room and includes a free continental breakfast, and access to the lounge, gym, sauna, pool, steam spa, accumassage bed, garden, mini golf. The bed and breakfast is approximately a 30min bus ride to the workshop space.

GETTING THERE

By Bus

There are three bus routes that stop at the corner of East Hastings and Hawks:

Eastbound (from downtown).
Catch the following buses from Hastings (south side) at Seymour (east side):

*No. 10 "Hastings"
*No. 16 "29th Avenue"
*No. 20 "Victoria"

The return trip: Westbound (to downtown).
Catch the following buses from Hastings (north side):

*No. 10 "Downtown"
*No. 16 "Arbutus"
*No. 20 "Downtown"

Rates within Vancouver: $2.50/Adults $1.75/Concession (children and seniors).

By Car

From the TransCanada (Highway #1): Take a westbound turn at East Hastings. Continue west along East Hastings to Hawks. From the turn-off to East Hastings, it will take approximately 20 minutes to reach the workshop space.

From the Barnet Highway: Heading west, the Barnet turns into Inlet Drive which joins with East Hastings. Continue west along East Hastings to Hawks. Turn left (north) on Hawks and continue to Pender St.

From Highway # 99 (this starts at the Blaine US border crossing): This highway eventually flows straight onto the Oak Street bridge. Follow Oak Street until it ends at West 6th Avenue. Turn right (east) on West 6th. Continue east on West 6th to Main Street. Turn left (north) at Main Street. Continue northbound on Main St. to East Hastings Street, Turn right (east) on East Hastings. Continue eastbound on East Hastings to Hawks. Turn right (south) on Hawks and continue to Pender St. turn left onto Pender St.

Parking

The Ukrainian Hall does not offer parking, however, street parking is available since there is parking on both E. Pender St. and Hawks Ave . Please note that most major streets in Vancouver do not allow parking between 6:00am - 9:00am and 3:00pm - 6:00pm.
